The symmetry of the radiation drive has been modeled for hohlraum experiments on Nova, where the laser beams have been smoothed with kinoform phase plates. The hohlraums considered are vacuum and CH4 gas-filled with windows. Simulations have been performed with the LASNEX 2-D radiation hydrodynamics code, where the propagation of the laser beams and their conversion to x rays are all modeled, as well as the hydrodynamics of the gas, window, case and capsule. SBS and SRS are not calculated by the code, so their effects are taken into account by reducing the laser energy. The effect of the KPP smoothing on the size of the focal spots and change in the bending of the laser beams are taken into account. Predictions of the imploded capsule asymetry versus laser and hohlraum geometry will be made. The results will be compared with data from the Nova experiments. This work is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy under contract.
