The O(+) transport model of Ishimoto et al. (1992) was used (in conjunction with measured N2(+) 1 N cross sections observed by ground optical measurements at Hawaii and Brazil) to investigate whether energetic O(+) ions can produce vibrationally enhanced N2(+) 1 N band emissions. Various realistic O(+) energy spectra were selected to calculate the N2(+) 1 N (0-0), (1-1), and (2-2) band emissions for a comparison with the observations. Results show that the majority of the O(+) must have energies below 10 keV to produce the observed vibrational enhancement, and that the total energy flux must be of the order of 10 erg/sq sm per sec. Such energy flux wound also cause peak atmospheric heating a factor of 3 larger than that due to the noon solar extreme UV energy deposition.
