We present a thorough test of the moment method, used for analysing line profile variations in (non-) radially pulsating stars. The method was first proposed by Balona (1986a,b; 1987; 1989) and subsequently extended by Aerts et al (1992). A generalization for multiperiodic stars was given by Mathias et al (1993). We applied the moment method to a large set of generated profiles, belonging to monoperiodic pulsations, with different values of the pulsation and rotation parameters. It seems that the moment method is able to identify low degree modes (l less than 4), if the rotation velocity is not too high. An important limitation is that one needs a large set of high resolution spectra. The estimates of the velocity parameters, also given by the moment method, are only an indication for the exact values and need to be confirmed or corrected by line profile fitting. Also a few double periodic pulsations were considered. The main mode could always be recovered with the moment method, while there were sometimes a few (2 or 3) indistinguishable solutions for the second mode.
