Alfvén waves are ubiquitous in space plasmas, influencing the dynamics of, for example, solar flares and magnetospheric reconnection. To better understand the role of the waves we have undertaken a program to study these waves in the laboratory. The eventual goal of the α lpha experiment is to study magnetic reconnection and the associated Alfvénic shock structure. We present results from studies of shear waves in a high-density, highly ionized helicon plasma. We see evidence of shear wave propagation in accordance with theoretical predictions, and evidence of mode conversion to compressional Alfvén waves. We present these results and a discussion of the applicability to magnetospheric plasmas. >http://existential.nmt.edu/research/plasma/basic/
