The definition of the scientific mission of a planetary automatic vehicle on the surface of Mars (fixed stations positioning, profile measurements during traveling, and in situ analysis) identifies constraints on the mission analysis: exploration site location, vehicle mass, volume of data to transmit, duration of mission, interaction with the Earth, orbiter support etc. The mission analysis carried out for three launch opportunities in 1998, 2001 and 2003, for different families of orbits, a priori considered, selects orbits suited to these constraints. The scenarios and strategies of insertion around Mars, orbit positioning and vehicle deorbiting, were evaluated. The mission conditions and dust storms, conjunction, etc., were characterized. The location of vehicles on the surface of Mars (rover and stations) was evaluated, using different kind of measurement involving the spacecraft. The primary results are presented.
