We will present preliminary results of a search using the MIPSGAL Legacy data for far-infrared counterparts to supernova remnants from the Green (2006) Catalog within the Galactic disk. MIPSGAL is a survey of 278 square degrees of the inner Galaxy at 24 and 70 μm using the MIPS (Multiband Imaging Photometer) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. These wavelengths allow us to probe significant infrared emission mechanisms from the remnants such as thermal emission (caused by shock heated dust grains) as well as some line emission from the gas ionized by the supernova ([O IV] as an example). A previous research for infrared counterparts (Reach et al., 2006) was done using the GLIMPSE legacy survey data, at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8 μm, where 18 out of 95 candidates were detected. We will report on the detection rate for supernova remnant candidates in the far-infrared as well as discuss some of the most interesting objects found so far.
This work is based on observations made with the Spitzer Space Telescope, which is operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology under a contract with NASA. Support for this work was provided by NASA in part through an award issued by JPL/Caltech.
