The MIMI/CHEMS instrument on Cassini began detecting pickup ions of Jovian origin at least 28 days and 26 million kilometers upstream from Jupiter. Their Jovian origin was flagged by the composition (oxygen, sulfur, and sulfur dioxide ions). The fact that these were pickup ions, and not escaping energetic magnetospheric ions, was indicated by their charge state (singly ionized) and the fact that they were preferentially detected when the CHEMS field of view was oriented towards the Sun. These energetic ions (up to 200 keV) apparently originate from the photoionization of an extended nebula of Jovian neutrals. The pickup ions continued to be detected at least 61 days after Cassini's closest approach on Dec. 30, 2000, some 44 million km downwind and 36 million km from the Sun-Jupiter line. During brief periods on Jan. 10 and Jan 23, 2001, CHEMS also detected magnetospheric ions including O+, O2+, O3+, and S+, S2+, S3+, S4+. Although these magnetospheric observations are limited, they should help answer open questions concerning ionic charge state distributions in the Jovian magnetosphere.
