Solar observations in the continuum at multiple spectral wavelengths are essential to understand the physics of flares. Recent observations at 212 and 405 GHz frequencies with the Solar Submillimeter-wave Telescope, installed in the Argentinean Andes, indicated the existence of a spectral component increasing with frequency towards the THz range, distinct from the well-known microwave component. These emissions raise difficulties for the interpretation using existing models. The atmosphere transmission at the mid-infrared "window” allows ground-based solar observations. Optical and instrumental setups were developed for observations at 10 micrometer (30 THz) continuum band. The first measurements indicated the presence of bright mid-IR "plage” areas around sunspots, and multiple rapid brightenings detected at different locations on the active regions during flares. New observations were carried out for longer periods and higher cadence using a mid-IR bolometer array camera at the focal plane of a telescope reflecting aperture diameter of 105 mm, producing diffraction limited field of view of 25 arc-seconds. Observations show the presence of enhanced spatial structures in plages exhibiting morphology variations on relatively long time scales (minutes). Rapid small heated sources are observed during various soft X-ray burst recorded by GOES satellites. A detailed analysis of 10 micrometer rapid short-lived heated sources was done for the GOES class B2.0 burst on December 10, 2007, 10 45 UT. The typical time scales are of the order of seconds. The corresponding temperature spikes at the camera array were of the order of 0.5-1.0 K. They correspond to temperature enhancements of 50-150 K above the active region mid-IR plage (referred to a temperature scale of about 1000 K between the sunspot and the photosphere). The two independent measurements are consistent with a short-lived source angular size of the order of few arc-seconds, with a temperature enhancement of the order of 10000 K.
