The absolute value of absorption by water vapor at microwave frequencies was measured on an earth-space path; the measurements are relevant for studies of satellite communications, remote sensing of the atmosphere, and radio astronomy. The data suggest a nonlinear relationship between microwave absorption and water vapor content in the atmosphere. The quadratic dependence set forth in this paper contradicts previously proposed linear relationships.
