Scientific paper

Transmission electron microscopy of the Santa Catharina meteorite is reported; the optical microstructure of Santa Catharina indicated that the matrix phase of the meteorite was composed of cloudy taenite. Two taenite phases consisting of interpenetrating single orientations analogous to the alpha and gamma phases of conventional cloudy taenite are found in the Santa Catharina matrix phase. Spinodal decomposition of the parent taenite at low temperatures is proposed to account for the formation of this duplex taenitic microstructure.
