About 570 microearthquakes of magnitude -2.4 to 3.2 occurred during June to August, 1984 near the newly impounded Sriramsagar reservoir (19°N, 78°E) in Andhra Pradesh State, India. The seismic phenomenon unknown in the area caused panic among the villagers. The tremors started 10 months after the reservoir was filled to its capacity and the epicentres were located about 10 km from the reservoir. A network of seismic stations was operated around the epicentral area through which 36 epicentres were located giving a NW trend in an area of about 1.5 km × 4 km. The composite fault plane solution indicates right-lateral strike-slip faulting along the NW trending nodal plane matching with the general drainage pattern in the area, inferred NW faults in the area, and known fault 60 km east. The marginal faults in the Godavari Rift Valley also trend in a NW direction. The depth of the tremeors was within a few hundred metres to a maximum of 1.5 km and all the tremors were associated with blasting sound. The largest earthquake of magnitude 3.2 was felt upto a distance of 8 km. This as well as four other events of magnitude 2.2 caused minor cracks and falling of mud plaster in D-type houses, which are poorly constructed mud houses.
The discriminatory seismic characteristics like foreshock-aftershock pattern, decay rate of aftershocks and magnitude ratio M1/M0 suggest that the seismicity was reservoir-induced. The seismic diffusivity of 4 × 104 cm2 s-1 is within the range for other reservoirs. The large scale flooding in the previous year might have also weakened the subterranean beds.
The larger events of the sequence having a magnitude of 2.2 and greater were associated with foreshock-aftershock activity. Increased foreshock activity for a few days and about a day of quiescence prior to some larger events was also noticed.
