The stability of MHD waves from magnetospheric plasma motion along a longitudinally inhomogeneous geomagnetic field is examined. Plasma motion in the stronger field direction is demonstrated to lead to generation of MHD oscillation. The instability mechanism examined in this paper may be responsible for generation of MHD oscillations in the region of open magnetic field lines of the terrestrial magnetosphere.
