The stability of MHD waves during the motion of magnetospheric plasma along a longitudinally nonuniform geomagnetic field is investigated theoretically. It is shown that the plasma motion in the direction of field enhancement leads to the generation of MHD oscillations. The instability mechanism considered here may be reponsible for the generation of MHD oscillations in the region of the magnetosphere's open field lines.
