We propose a general relativistic invariant theory in terms of only fundamental fermions without any reference to a metric. The integration over matter quantum fluctuations generates spontaneously a scale Λ, to be later identified with the Planck mass. For energies E << Λ the theory produces a metric in terms of which we find the usual Einstein action with vanishing cosmological constant and with a relation between electromagnetic and gravitational couplings. For E ~ Λ the theory departs from usual Einstein gravitation - not even permitting an unambiguous definition of a metric - thus allowing the conjecture of a better untraviolet behaviour.
