The paper is concerned with accuracy requirements for group delay measurements in radio sounding problems associated with the reconstruction of the regular ionosphere profile. The effect of three-dimensional inhomogeneities on group delay measurements is analyzed, and relations are obtained for the dispersion of group paths as a function of the statistical inhomogeneity characteristics. It is shown that, for a wide range of ionosphere sounding problems, an accuracy of group path measurements better than the Fresnel radius (i.e., 1-5 km) is usually not required.
