The method of natural orthogonal components is used to analyze equatorial geomagnetic variations to see if it can separate the electrojet and counter electrojet variations. It is found that as a function of time the first component essentially contains information about Sq and electrojet part while the second component accounts for the counter electrojet and disturbance field variations. In the latitudinal profiles, as well, the first component brings out the Sq along with the electrojet and the second component reproduces the counter electrojet variations.
