The development of the Sheffield meteor radar to its present state is described and the results of two 'special' periods of wind observations, in August 1974 and in January 1976, are presented. The data show marked differences between the summer and the winter sets particularly with respect to oscillations in the wind whose periods exceed one day. Individually the two sets agree well with the seasonal means established during 12 years' meteor wind observations at Sheffield
