Results of an analysis of two data sets recorded with the Sheffield meteor radar are discussed with particular reference to the frequency range corresponding to periods from 1 to 12 hr. Meaningful wind spectra can be obtained which agree well with those obtained by other methods down to periods of about 1 hr. It is argued that this agreement suggests an interpretation in terms of internal gravity waves, both for the Sheffield data and other data from similar height ranges. There is no evidence for wave saturation, suggesting that the stable temperature profile at the base of the thermosphere allows upward propagating waves to grow in amplitude after leaving the mesosphere.
