In the past few years, measurements of H3+ have been used to infer a cosmic-ray ionization rate in diffuse interstellar clouds about an order of magnitude larger than previous estimates. Measurements of the metastable helium line at 10830 Angstroms can provide an independent check to these recent developments. By observing He along a sightline which already has H3+ measurements, we can directly compare the results from two different tracers of the cosmic-ray ionization rate. Because the cosmic-ray ionization rate is vital to many physical and chemical models of the ISM, it is imperative that we use as many independent estimates as possible to constrain its value.
