Methods of metamorphic petrology are applied to questions of the structure and metamorphism of the earth and terrestrial planets, the interior inhomogeneity of the earth, the petrology and origin of the continents, the submergence of the oceanic crust in subduction zones, and metamorphism in subduction zones. An obduction model for metamorphism is proposed which can account for many facts unexplainable by the conventional subduction model.
