There has been much work on transport in the stratosphere and also on how wave motions modulate the flow in the mesosphere. However, Lagrangian transport in the mesosphere is less understood due to complicated interactions between planetary waves, gravity waves, tides, the residual circulation, and the mean flow. It is important to understand transport at altitudes above the stratosphere, namely in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere, to assess the transport of NOx into and within the polar vortex. This work will use the latest version of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model to investigate Lagrangian transport in the stratosphere, mesosphere, and lower thermosphere. The goal is to determine the extent to which horizontal and vertical transport contribute to atmospheric coupling. Simulations will include running forward trajectories initialized in the auroral oval, as well as running backward trajectories from regions where enhanced NOx is observed.
