In about five decades from now, CO_2 content of the Earth's atmosphere is likely to be doubled. This will increase the temperature of the lower atmosphere and decrease the temperature of the mesophere and thermosphere. A model prediction reports that the temperature of the mesosphere will decrease by about 10 K. This decrease in temperature will be associated with a decrease in NO density, an increase in H_2O density, an increase in the ratio of clustered ion to molecular ion densities, an increase in clustered ion disappearance height and an overall decrease in ionization densities. A scenario of these changes in the mesopause region has been presented in this paper.
