The results of N-body simulations for the dynamical evolution of galaxy groups are presented and interpreted. It is found that, for group sizes of not more than about 20 galactic radii, slow hyperbolic encounters give rise to sudden and extensive merging associated with the group's overall contraction which leads to the formation of a large central object. The experimental results obtained indicate that, in poor, compact groups where the crossing times are under one billion years, extensive merging must have occurred in about 10 crossing times from formation. An identification of the central objects found in the numerical simulations with the small cD-type galaxies observed in some poor, compact groups is suggested.
