The effects of a latent heat of melting and the advection of heat by the melt on the mantle temperature, melt production rate, and melt migration in the mantle beneath mid-ocean ridges are examined in numerical experiments in which the flow in the mantle is driven by the motion of the surface plates and by melting-induced variations in mantle density. Results demonstrate the relative effect of the various forces, fluxes, and parameters and their interactions on the mantle flow, melting, and melt migration.
