Physical mechanisms are described which have been proposed to account for the formation and decay of the secondary maximum oxone density in the lower polar stratosphere. The mechanisms discussed are related to the effect of galactic cosmic rays, which are thought to be the primary factor responsible for the observed increase in the total ozone content in the polar stratosphere in comparison with the equatorial stratosphere. The decay dynamics of the secondary ozone density maximum is examined with reference to the results of numerical photochemical modeling.
