Archaeomagnetic and radiocarbon measurements on a series of ancient Aboriginal fireplaces and burnt tree-stump sites in southeastern Australia are presented, and an outline of changes in the local direction of the earth's magnetic field over the last 1500 years is offered. An analysis of these new data from the southern hemisphere and published data for the northern hemisphere indicates that a large change occurred in the orientation of the geomagnetic dipolar axis between about 1400 and 1650 A.D. Present address: Physics Department, University of Adelaide, G.P.O. Box 498, Adelaide S.A. 5001, Australia.
