The direct measurement of (p,γ) and (α,γ) reactions on radioactive species can significantly improve the understanding of novae, X-ray bursters, and other astrophysical events. Measurements of many of these low cross section reactions require the high-intensity, high-purity, high-quality beams planned for a next generation ISOL radioactive beam facility. Recoil separators are ideally suited for measuring capture reaction cross sections in inverse kinematics using a heavy radioactive ion beam and a H or He gas target. This is because they combine a very high recoil detection efficiency with the necessary high rejection (sometimes to better than 1 part in 10^12) of scattered beam particles. Important astrophysics experiments will be discussed, and a design concept of a new recoil separator will be presented. The desired properties of recoil separators, detectors, and gas target systems for these measurements will also be discussed.
