The paper reports on the first measurements of the wind velocity on the surface of Venus recorded during final phase of descent of Venera 9 and 10 and while on the surface. The cup anemometer system and some tests on earth for determining best placement of the equipment in order to eliminate any effect of the spacecraft are described. Venera-9 measurements were performed over the course of 49 min. The wind velocity averaged over 16-sec intervals varied little from its mean value of 0.5 m/sec. Venera 9 was in a region of broken rocks. Reliable data from Venera 10 were obtained for 90 sec, and the mean wind velocity was about 1 m/sec, with little variation.
