In this poster we discuss rocket-borne measurements of charged dust in relation to ground-based lidar measurements of atomic iron and sodium. The measurements, taken over a two week period in March 2002, were made at Poker Flat Research Range. Results from the mesospheric charged dust probe are presented in the accompanying paper by Lynch et al. Here we discuss these dust measurements in context of the neutral iron and sodium measurements taken during the rocket launch period. Mesospheric dust and neutral metals have a common source, meteoric ablation. Initial data from the first dust rocket flight indicates a strong correlation between the negatively charged dust and structure in the background neutral iron layer, as well as a weaker correlation with the background atomic sodium layer. We discuss these results, as well as data from the remaining three dust rockets (yet to be flown as of this writing).
