Results of systematic experimental studies of electric charges on models and in their wakes simulating the supersonic motion of bolides in air, are presented. Measurements of the charges were carried out on ballistic units with the aid of high-sensitivity electrostatic gauges. Experimental data were obtained that showed the formation of electric charges on bodies and in their wakes during motion at supersonic velocities for materials of different thermophysical properties, over a wide range of pressures in the incident flow and a wide range of Mach numbers, with different compositions of the gas, and in the presence of differing mechanisms of breakdown of the bodies. To determine a possible mechanism of electric-charge formation, calculations of the gasdynamic parameters behind the shock wave and of the heating of the body during its motion along its path were carried out. The results of the study can account for the electric phenomena taking place during observation of the supersonic motion of bolides in the atmosphere.
