The ^28Si(^4He,^8He)^24Si reaction has been used to determine the energies of the first two excited states in ^24Si. This is the first measurement of excited states in ^24Si, which are of particular importance for the calculation of the ^22Mg(2p,2γ)^24Si reaction rate in explosive hydrogen burning in novae. The implications of the experimental results on the reaction rate and on the production of ^22Na in novae are discussed.
