ESTEC is presently developing the prototype of a novel miniaturised videogrammetry system for metrology applications in thermal-vacuum conditions. This is based on a set of space qualified micro-cameras, integrated with the so called `multi-station' concept. The goal is to characterize the achievable measurement accuracy for large objects inside any suitable test facility in Europe. Testing performed in ambient conditions has shown that an accuracy in the order of 15 parts per million (ppm) is in principle achievable. The results have been presented at the 21st Aerospace Testing Seminar (California, USA) during the last quarter of 2003. The thermal-vacuum tests, subject of this paper, have been carried out to: verify the functionality of the prototype system, investigate the stability of the camera optical calibration, to verify the measurement accuracy and confirm the system resolution and the capability to track dimensional changes. The test results must confirm that the proposed prototype can be used to replace more standard systems based either on canisters or on measurements performed outside the vacuum chambers.
