The meaning of magnetic reconnection is clear in toriodal systems. It is a change in the topology of the magnetic field lines. The rate of reconnection is determined by loop integrals of the electric field along the closed magnetic field lines. In astrophysical situations the meaning is generally less clear. For field lines that penetrate the surface of the sun and then return to that surface, one can define reconnection by the evolution of the topological properties of the footpoints. This evolution is determined by the integral of the electric field along the field lines. However even in this relatively simple problem the boundary conditions on the current parallel to the magnetic field on the solar surface lead to subtleties in the formation of the extremely large current densities that are associated with reconnection. The relation between reconnection in topologically toroidal and in astrophysical magnetic fields will be discussed.
