The matter tensor and motion of an oscillating bar in free fall in a Bondi plane gravitational wave (Synge, 1964) are derived analytically for arbitrary and not necessarily constant bar frequency and amplitude. Exact results are obtained for the case discussed by Dixon (1973) and Ehlers and Rudolf (1977), where the quadrupole moment of the bar is in phase with the Riemann tensor of the wave: the bar motion is shown to be geodesic. The matter tensor for a suspended bar (such as the Weber bar used in searches for gravitational waves) is also calculated.
