The feasibility of tracing the configuration of evolving magnetic field by material flows is investigated using numerical simulations. Particular consideration is given to the evolution of a magnetic arcade due to differential motions of its footpoints. Using a numerical scheme based on the method of projected characteristics, described by Nakagawa et al. (1987), and newly derived proper boundary conditions, it is shown that, during the evolution of a magnetic field, material flows develop to outline the configuration of the evolving field. Physical significance of the results is discussed.
