OMEGA acquired hyperspectral data (0.35 to 5.08 μm) over the MER landing site in Gusev crater during orbit 24 (landing site and plains to the east, ~400 m/pixel) and orbit 72 (Columbia Hills and surrounding plains, ~600 m/pixel). Together the hyperspectral data cover the regions traversed and examined by the Spirit rover during its primary and extended missions. OMEGA data were reduced to surface spectral reflectance values using surface-atmosphere radiative transfer models constrained by Spirit-based Pancam and Mini-TES observations and MGS-based TES data. OMEGA spectra are dominated by nanophase ferric oxide bands ≤ 1 μm and exhibit shallow pyroxene bands at ~1 and 2 μm. Spectral slopes are negative for wavelengths ≥ 1 μm suggesting that opaque minerals (e.g. magnetite) or grain coatings influence spectral properties. Because Spirit showed that soils dominate the scene areally, OMEGA spectral patterns should be controlled by soil exposures. Cross comparison of Spirit data and OMEGA data for areas traversed by the rover show generally good agreement in retrieval of mineral types and abundances.
