The use of adaptive optics techniques developed by DOD in stellar
astronomy is examined. Laser guide stars systems for astronomical
adaptive optics is described, including the developing use of the sodium
beacon technique multiple guide stars. Efforts to develop better lasers
for use with the sodium beacon technique are discussed.
