The problem of night-time maintenance of F-region at mid and high latitudes is studied using incoherent scatter data for the two chains of stations in the European zone along with incoherent scatter measurements taken at St. Santin. Plasma flux of about 2 trillion/sq m/sec, lasting 3-5 hr around midnight, is observed at stations close to St. Santin. The contribution of soft particle precipitation to this flux is insignificant. Direct measurement of vertical component of the drift shows that it can account for only a part of this flux. Simultaneous F2 incoherent scatter measurements taken at several stations indicate a latitudinal variation of the flux and the possible contribution of horizontal drifts. Northward drift due to eastward electric fields are likely to contribute significantly to the mid-latitude flux. The flux which decreases with increase in latitude can be explained in terms of horizontal drifts if recent electric field measurements are used. The absence of flux at higher latitudes could be due to very small electric fields there. The post magnetic conjugate sunrise flux observed at these latitudes could be due to a different source.
