A model to investigate the effect of impulsive and nonsteady driving mechanisms, in particular the coupling of energy from compressional waves into field-line guided modes for an arbitrary m-value is proposed. Some initial numerical solutions of the coupled hydromagnetic wave equations in a cylindrical magnetospheric geometry are presented to demonstrate the model's possibilities. Initial results are presented and show that impulsive stimuli at the magnetopause set up compressional cavity resonances which drive transverse field-line resonances within the magnetosphere. The results are in agreement with the predictions of Kivelson and Southwood (1985).
