It is well known and understood that during strongly southward IMF, merging occurs between the interplanetary magnetic field and the magnetospheric field lines near the subsolar point. During strongly northward IMF, it is generally accepted that merging occurs north (south) of the cusp in the northern (southern) hemisphere. What is less understood is the magnetospheric configuration during periods of relatively small IMF Bz northward, or periods when the IMF Bz is positive but only slightly larger then the magnitude of By. We investigate these conditions using the University of Michigan global MHD code. The magnetospheric and ionospheric configurations are examined for a number of different small positive Bz orientations.
