It is shown that the loading of solar wind by heavy cometary ions leads to the excitation of Alfven turbulence. By making the cometary ion distribution function isotropic, the Alfven oscillations produce a collective mechanism of cometary ion pick-up, thereby affecting the law of motion of the loaded solar wind as well as the position and structure of the cometary shock wave. Similar to a cosmic ray shock wave, the cometary shock wave is diffusive in nature; its frontal width is at least mi/mp (the heavy ion and proton masses, respectively) times greater than the frontal width of the planetary shock wave. The results are in agreement with observational data obtained during encounters with comets Giacobini-Zinner and Halley.
