The MHD stability of force-free magnetic fields in rarified plasma is examined in connection with the problem of magnetic heating of the solar corona. On the basis of energy considerations, the role of the line-tying effect in the MHD stability condition is demonstrated. The threshold for tearing mode instability in a plane sheared force-free magnetic field is analyzed. It is shown that this field remains stable even for infinitely large values of the shear localized at a perfectly conducting plasma boundary.
