Results are presented on the time and frequency domain analysis of magnetic field and plasma data obtained by ISEE 1 and ISEE 2, which was carried out to determine wave modes and directions in the magnetosheath for one particular magnetosheath crossing on July 27, 1987. Wave polarizations were determined by transforming the magnetic field to a field- and boundary-aligned coordinate system devised specifically for magnetosheath fluctuatons, and wave directions were inferred from time delays and wave polarizations. The analysis shows that characteristic directions control the transmission of energy from localized sources.
