It is noted that the earth's atmosphere serves two functions with regard to life on earth: (1) it is an effective protective system against electromagnetic waves of a specific range and against corpuscular radiation; and (2) faint low-frequency electromagnetic fields supply living cells with mechanical energy. Particular attention is given to the way in which the upper atmosphere provides magnetic protection against proton electron fluxes.
