The mechanism of charged-particle acceleration by reflection from magnetic mirrors in interplanetary shock waves is considered. It is shown that absolute particle fluxes in this case are determined by the balance between charged-particle and magnetic-field pressure in a mirror in the body of a shock wave. A steady-state one-dimensional problem is solved analytically for isotropic particle reflection from solar-wind inhomogeneities. Absolute accelerated-particle fluxes are estimated for the events of August 4-5, 1972, and the results are found to agree well with observations. It is suggested that the particle fluxes of August 4-5, 1972, were accelerated with the aid of the mechanism considered.
