Scientific paper

Theoretical aspects of ideal and resistive instabilities related to solar phenomena are reviewed. The interest in the stability of solar coronal structures derives from their observed lifetime (much longer than the relevant hydromagnetic timescale) coupled with their active behavior. This means that they must be generally stable with respect to fast, destructive instabilities, typically those governed by the ideal MHD equations, and, at the same time, they must allow slow, non-disrupting, dissipative processes to take place.
