The relation between solar flares and magnetic fields is reviewed along with interpretations of solar magnetic fields and the relation between the topology of individual field lines and the cellular topology of flux surfaces. The magnetic point-charge model is used to calculate the cellular fluxes of two complex bipolar spot pairs as a function of spot-group separation for the special limited case where the spot pairs are collinear and of equal spot strength. Exact solutions for the cellular fluxes are provided in this special case, and it is suggested that solar magnetic-field codes be further developed to compute these fluxes in more general arrangements. A simple relationship between magnetic flux and energy changes, which follows from electric circuit theory, is demonstrated and employed to consider the energy requirements of flares.
