Wideband radio polarimetry is a prime way to study strength and structure of magnetic fields in ionized supernova remnant (SNR) shells, important for cosmic ray acceleration. We have ATCA interferometer data for the Vela SNR and for an unidentified magnetic shell G279-0.5, visible only in radio polarization and presumably an old SNR which has dissipated too much to emit synchrotron emission which is visible over the background. In both objects, preliminary rotation measure (RM) maps indicate a large-scale, ordered magnetic field across the shells, with additional fluctuations. However, reliable RM calculations require including of large scales in linear polarization maps. Therefore we request Parkes observations for the Vela SNR and G279-0.5. The resulting RM maps across both fields will enable us to confirm the appearance of an ordered magnetic field across the remnants, estimate its strength and investigate its relation to the Galactic magnetic field. Furthermore, RM fluctuations and depolarization in the remnant give information about the turbulent properties of the gas. This may be the first detection of an old, radio-invisible SNR, only detectable through radio polarimetry, and possibly forming a new class of 'missing' SNRs.
