To explain the generation of magnetic fields in the Universe is one of the key issues for the next generation of radio telescopes. While the galactic alphaOmega-dynamo is among the favourite explanations for the large-scale magnetic field in galaxies, the observational proof is still missing. Since the presence of shear is vitally important for the working dynamo, the analysis of the magnetic field structure in the almost rigidly rotating galaxy NGC55 provides a lower limit for the efficiency of the magnetic field amplification by the dynamo. NGC55 is nearby enough to study the magnetic field structure with high spatial resolution using radio continuum polarimetry. There are archive observations at 20cm and 6cm available, which show polarized emission. New 6cm observations with the ATCA will help us to study the extended emission. Our maps, however, are strongly affected by missing zero-spacing flux at 20cm and particularly at 6cm. We propose new observations with the 64-m Parkes telescope, to be combined with the ATCA observations in order to fill in the missing zero-spacing flux. This method has been successfully demonstrated for the case of the nearby edge-on galaxy NGC253.
