We discuss the relation between spiral arms and magnetic arms in galaxies. Consequences of different properties of the ISM in arms and interarms for the dynamo induced magnetic field are illuminated. By means of kinematic global MHD simulations the role of gravitational induced time dependent spiral flows on the induction process is investigated.
